About this video Over deze video
Have you ever stopped to wonder why music only has 12 notes? Between each note on a keyboard, there are technically infinite sounds, so why don't we use them?
You might recognize Luke Ferrell from our Voice Only Challenge, but today he is breaking down a piece of musical history. We're looking at the chaotic early days of music before standardization, when musicians tuned by mathematical ratios, local traditions, or simply by ear.
While those old tuning methods sounded amazing in a single key, they created a massive problem the second an orchestra tried to change keys together. To fix it, musicians had to make a grand compromise that forever changed how we create and listen to music.
The next time you listen to your favorite song, just remember: you're listening to infinity divided by 12.
